I’m a visual editor and author based in the New York metro area.
During the last few years, I’ve been freelancing for The Wall Street Journal, NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council), the Pulitzer Prizes and The New York Times. I was a staff picture editor at NYT for more than 13 years and edited both news and feature stories.
In 2020, I served as the jury chairwoman for the Pulitzer Prizes in Breaking News and Feature Photography and served on the jury in 2019.
I have a passion for photography history.
I created and edited The Lively Morgue, a Tumblr blog utilizing The Times' vast historical photo collection. Lively had nearly a quarter-million followers upon its retirement in 2017.
In 2016 I co-authored a feature for NYT called "Unpublished Black History". These stories showcased never before seen photos of African Americans found in NYT’s archives. The series had over 1.7 million readers and ten thousand responses in the first days following publication.
In 2017, ‘Unpublished’ became a book "Unseen, Unpublished Black History from The New York Times Archives". Now in its fifth reprinting, Unseen has received praise from Senator Corey Booker, Henry Louis Gates Jr., Marian Wright Edelman and Historian Michael Beschloss, among others.
Unseen was named "One of the 10 best photography books" of 2017 by The Smithsonian Institution. The New York Times Book Review called it "A touching triumphalism that glitters throughout" and it was included in "Best Gift Books” of 2017 by People Magazine and gift guides for The Chicago Tribune and San Francisco Chronicle.
Unseen was officially presented at the Smithsonian Institution in December, 2017 and Harvard University, Barnard College and The Montclair Library Foundation, in 2018.
My second book, “Only in New York” is a curated visual juxtaposition of New York City life through the lens of the staff photographers of The Times and was published by Rizzoli in 2019. Lens Culture Magazine called the pairings of the photographs “An act of Genius”
In August 2020, a third book project, “A Force for the Future” An illustrated celebration of NRDC’s 50-year battle to safeguard the planet was released by Abbeville Press.
